How to Block Ads in Chrome without any Extension

Intrusive ads are annoying, especially when you are in the middle of reading an article on a site. Ads on a page should take up a small portion of the screen. But when it takes up 50% or more of the entire screen, it becomes a nuisance.

To be fair for many bloggers, Ads are necessary as they are the only revenue source for that site. And as a fellow individual who uses the same monetization scheme, I understand the importance of these things. But we must admit that ads that almost cover the page’s majority space are just outrageous to even for those who understand its necessity.

So since we are here to discuss how to block ads in Chrome without any extension, that’s what we will provide you here. We must address and deal with the problem as they happen.

If you do not want those intrusive ads in Google Chrome but still not comfortable with installing a Chrome extension, then this is the solution you are looking for. Just make sure that Chrome is updated to the latest version on your computer.

Blocking Ads on Chrome from Settings

Step 1. Block Popup Ads

Please be informed that this method is mostly limited to just those pop-up ads that take up most of the screen. The smaller ads on the side and some portion of the webpage will not be affected by this method.

  1. The first step is to launch Google Chrome.
  2. On Chrome’s topmost right corner of the screen, you will find the three dots shortcut for the Settings. Click on those.Chrome 3 Dots Settings
  3. Once you are in the Settings of Chrome, use the search feature on top of the page and type POPUP
    Type Popup
  4. Press the Enter key to get the search results.
  5. You should see the Content Settings tab down below. Click on it.
  6. On the next page, you will find the Popups tab. Click on it to enter.
    Click Popups
  7. On the Popups control slider, make sure to disable it.
    Disable Popups
  8. That should block all the generic popup ads functioning on the websites you are visiting using Chrome.
  9. For those stubborn sites that use a different algorithm to push popup ads on their web pages, you might need to do extra measures for them to be able to block their ads on Chrome.
  10. Just below the Popup settings slider, you will find Block and Allow option. Use Block one and click on Add.
    Type Block Address
  11. On the small window that will appear, type on the website that you do not want to push popup ads on your screen.
  12. When you’re done, click on Add. That’s it. It should now monitor the popup ads that appear on that specific website. Also, Read Chrome Night Mode: How To Put Google Chrome On Night Mode.

Step 2. Disable JavaScript

If you are not fond of ads, no matter what size they are, then this is the method that will work for you. Follow the steps below and sort this issue for good to avoid shutting them every time they pop up. So here is how you can do it.

  1. The first is to launch Google Chrome.
  2. On the topmost right corner of Chrome, you will find the three dots shortcut for the Settings. Click on those.
    Click Settings
  3. Once you are in the Settings area, use the search feature on top of the page and type JAVASCRIPT
    Type Javascript
  4. Click the Content Settings.
  5. Somewhere down below the page, you will find the JavaScript tab. Click on it to enter.
    Javascript
  6. Just below the JavaScript slider, click on it to change the current settings from Allowed to Blocked.
    Disable javascript
  7. Now close Google Chrome and relaunch it.
  8. This time try opening websites using Chrome. You will notice that whatever website you visit, the site will only be displayed in its basic form without images, videos, and ads of any size and, most especially, no more intrusive ads.

Special Notes

This method has some advantages and disadvantages. The advantages would be that all the pages you visit will load faster, and websites with cluttered Java-based features will look much cleaner.

YouTube no videos

The disadvantage is that since most websites use Java-based applications such as animation and video players, that means you will miss out on some of their features. The best example of this is the YouTube site. With the JavaScript disabled, you will not be able to play any youtube video. All you will see is the YouTube logo without any playlist or anything on it.

As you may have noticed, there are some positive effects and some disadvantages with these methods. But since you already know how to control these settings, you should change them depending on your task for the day.

In Conclusion

If you want to read texts and news from the internet using Google Chrome, then disabling the JavaScript will do. But if you visit video streaming sites but do not want annoying popup ads, you may try using the first method.
